Cigarette Vending Machine Ban Review Fails
The Government will now be able to ban cigarette vending machines from pubs after a judicial review failed in the High Court.
Machine provider Sinclair Collis, part of Imperial Tobacco, had attempted to block the proposed ban by way of a judicial review but its challenge failed.
The Judge stated that a ban on the sale of tobacco from automatic vending machines was appropriate to protect public health and did not go beyond what was necessary to achieve that end.
Imperial Tobacco had hoped to prove that measures such as electronic ID and remote controls have stopped underage sales from machines in other countries.
In England and Wales, cigarette vending macines will now be banned from 1 October.
